A presentation on Civil War soldiers and their quilts will be held September 8.

The Captain Avery Museum will present a lesson in Civl War history in September.
Mavis Slawson, a textile historian and docent at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, will present a program on Civil War soldiers and their quilts on Sunday, September 8 at 2 p.m. at the Captain Avery Museum.
Slawson holds degrees in nursing and art history. She has lectured on quilting in the Civil War era and in the 1850s in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania
“Quilts were important to soldiers in the Civil War," said Cheryl Rigdon, a member of the Captain Avery Museum’s board of directors in a release. "Some soldiers brought quilts from home with them into battle, others received them from the Sanitary Commission, still others found that making quilts provided therapy for what we now know as post-traumatic stress syndrome.”
This program is presented in partnership with the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. The presentation is free, but a $10 donation is suggested.
The Captain Avery Museum is located at 1418 EW Shady Side Road .
