Edgewater Elementary Celebrates Reading with Book Character Pumpkin Patch

To celebrate the harvest season, Edgewater Elementary hosted a school-wide “Book Character Pumpkin Patch” this week in its media center, featuring gourd-like personifications from Captain Underpants to Pippi Longstocking.

In its third year at the local school, the pumpkin patch was on display throughout the week, featuring student projects completed at home, but then shared with other students and teachers. More than 160 pumpkin book characters filled the media center.

“I am truly amazed and impressed with the enthusiasm and creativity that our students exhibit with their pumpkin book characters,” said Stephanie Ashley, Edgewater Elementary’s media specialist in an email.

The effort helps teachers and parents offer tangible applications of reading, encouraging a student’s passion for books and literature, said active school mom, Holly Bice.

“I think you have to think outside the box and get young readers excited about it. If they see something, experience something tangible about reading, it’s very worthwhile,” Bice said.
