Edgewater Scout Families Gather for 2012 Pinewood Derby
Sandi Brookshire came away with the "Best Chili" award after the event concluded.
Edgewater Pack 815 held its most competitive Pinewood Derby race ever Jan. 29, at LondonTowne Community Hall.
Accompanied by a chili cook-off, more than 40 cars participated in the race. Each scout received a block of wood made of pine, four plastic wheels and four metal nails for axles. With the help of an adult partner, scouts whittled the block of pine with a hand knife and used different saws to carve and shape their car.
After sanding and painting, the finished car could not exceed five ounces in weight. Each scout’s car raced six heats, six lanes wide, giving each car a chance to run in every lane. The top three finishers from each of the Tiger, Wolf, Webelos I and Webelos II dens moved onto the championship round.
