Fire Department Investigates Arson in Edgewater

Fire officials believe the fire was intentionally set in a targeted attack and are currently looking for suspects.

A fire on Highland Drive in Edgewater has been determined to be arson, and the Anne Arundel County Fire Department is currently looking for information on the circumstances of the blaze.

Just before 10 p.m. Monday night, the fire department responded to a call for a dwelling fire in the 500 block of Highland Drive in Edgewater. The flames had already been extinguished when fire fighters arrived on the scene, but the crew "immediately recognized the fire was intentionally set" and requested the involvement of a fire investigation unit, according to fire officials.

Investigators were able to determine that the fire was arson. They also believe that the blaze was not randomly set and that the residence, which was occupied at the time of the fire, was likely targeted for some reason.

Officials estimate that approximately $8,000 in damages were caused by the fire. No injuries were reported.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the Fire and Explosives Investigation Unit at 410-222-7884 or the Arson Tip Line at 410-222-TIPS.
