Giant Donates 150 Hams to Maryland Food Bank

Giant Foods' corporate headquarters and the local grocer in Edgewater donate food to the Maryland Food Bank ahead of Easter.

Giant Foods announced they donated approximately 150 hams this week to the Maryland Food Bank from their corporate headquarters in Landover.

The effort was part of greater effort where the national grocers offered goods to four other Feeding America Food Banks.

Here in Edgewater, the actually donates food to the Maryland Food Bank twice a week. According to its store manager, giving back to the community is at the core of every Giant across the country.

“There’s a huge focus on each individual store being a big part in their community. Each store needs to have its own community attachment—every community is different,” said the Edgewater Giant store manager, Betsy Myers. “I see us here as a big part of the community. I feel like we’re the ones helping people take care of their families and making sure we have everything they need.”

About twice a week, volunteers with the Maryland Food Bank swing by the local grocery store and grab donated baked goods.

“We don’t give them leftover bread. We don’t do perishables like meat and deli because it’s not safe,” Myers said. “Sometimes we give them a half-full shopping cart, sometimes we give them two full shopping carts.”
