Jake's Steaks Closes, Man Charged for Smoking Pot With Minors, Muddy Road Construction Delays: April 2013 News Rewind

April 2013 was a busy month for business news in the Edgewater and Davidsonville areas. Jake's Steaks and Kids Consignments closed, while plans for a new shopping center emerged.

Lighthouse Plaza Will Bring New Businesses to Edgewater

A new shopping center will be built in Edgewater. According to Tracie Reynolds, a spokesperson for Anne Arundel County Planning and Zoning, Lighthouse Plaza is being built at 3145 Solomons Island Rd.

Police Seeking Public Help in Davidsonville Homicide
Anne Arundel County police are continuing to ask the public for help seeking information on a March 22 homicide in Davidsonville. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Carbonaro with the Anne Arundel County police at 410-222-3453.

Police Charge Man After He Smokes Pot with Minors

After a 31-year-old man reportedly smoked marijuana with teens who were in his care, police said he was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Police said Benjamin Siggers of Baltimore was a substitute teacher and served as a youth group counselor for a church at the time of the incident.

Jake's Steaks Closing for Business 
After more than 12 years in the South River Colony Marketplace, Jake's Steaks closed its doors for good. Barb Gossett, who has been a manager at Jake's Steaks for three years, said a lack of business is the main reason for the close.

The construction at the Muddy Creek Road intersection in Edgewater isn’t scheduled to be complete until the summer of 2014, and the Department of Public Works gave a number of reasons for the delays. The $5.6 million project to improve the heavily traveled intersection was approved 12 years ago, in 2001.

Kids Consignments Closing Its Doors
Kids Consignments in Edgewater closed its doors for business on April 20. Owner Stephanie Mendoza cited personal reasons and losing the space as causes for the close.

South River High Rated High in Washington Post Rankings
South River High received the highest marks of any Anne Arundel County School in a Washington Post ranking of schools across the country. In its ranking of schools in Maryland, South River ranked 7th, and Southern ranked 34th.
