County Schedules Deer Hunt for Triton Park Wednesday

The Anne Arundel County Department of Parks and Recreation is holding a managed deer hunt Wednesday in the area of Beverly Triton Park (Mayo).

The hunt will take place from 5:30 a.m. to noon, and is not open to the public. Though the county generally accepts applications for its managed hunt program on a continuous basis, the program is at capacity for the 2013-2014 season, according to the website. 

The county schedules these hunts to help control the local deer population. Too many deer can have a negative impact on native plant and other animal populations. 

"Dense deer populations negatively impact forest regeneration, natural succession and biological diversity," according to the parks and recreation website. 

The county says that large deer populations also increase the risk of the vehicular collisions with the animals, such as the one that happened with a police cruiser on Central Avenue in Edgewater in November. 

"Hunters are strongly urged to harvest as many antlerless deer as they can take safely and humanely," according to the county parks and recreation website.
