Mayo Peninsula Residents Petition for Natural Gas

The digital petition, targeted toward state Sen. John Astle (D-Annapolis), has received 170 signatures.

Residents of the Mayo peninsula recently created a petition to install a natural gas supply to combat increasing electricity expenses.

According to an online petition created on GoPetition.com, 170 signatures have been gathered in hopes that state Sen. John Astle (D-Annapolis) would consider legislation providing a natural gas supply to the peninsula.

Patch contacted Astle to learn if he had heard of the petition, but was unable to reach the senator.

The petition’s preamble claims that the entire 2.5 miles of the Mayo peninsula has no access to natural gas.

Residents "depend on expensive electricity (which frequently fairs in winter ice storms), expensive other fossil fuels such as fuel oil and propane or wood pellets,” according to the online petition.

The site said that ice storms create serious health and life-threatening risks for older residents because of potential power outages. The petition in its entirety is shown below:

"We the undersigned, call on the Maryland State Legislature to require the Maryland Public Service Commission to require Baltimore Gas and Electric to install at their capital cost, natural gas supplies to all the businesses, institutions, and residents of the Mayo, Maryland Peninsula.

If BG&E refuses to comply with this request or legislated mandate, or raises objections including, but not limited to exorbitant costs, we the undersigned respectfully ask the Maryland State Legislature to pass legislation asking for any and all competitive natural gas suppliers such as, but not limited to, Washington Gas Light Co, to provide the natural gas infrastructure service we request."
