Fort Belvoir Helicopter Crash In St. Mary's County Leaves 1 Dead, 2 Injured

A helicopter from Fort Belvoir crashed Monday afternoon at Breton Bay Golf Course in St. Mary's County, killing one person.

(Updated at 6:15 p.m.) LEONARDTOWN, MD — One person was killed and two others injured when a military helicopter crashed at the Breton Bay Golf Course in St. Mary's County Monday, Army officials said. The helicopter was a UH-60 blackhawk, officials at Fort Belvoir base in Virginia said in a statement on Facebook.

There were three crew members on board the helicopter, one of whom was evacuated by medical helicopter. At the time of the crash, the helicopter was conducting a routine training flight.

The crash occurred just before 2 p.m. According to military officials, one of the crew members injured in the crash is in serious condition and the other is said to be in critical condition. Both are currently at area hospitals.

"We are deeply saddened by this loss within our community," Maj. Gen. Bradley A. Becker, commanding general, Joint Force Headquarters National Capital Region and the U.S. Army Military District of Washington, said in a statement. "Our condolences go out to the families and friends affected by this tragedy, and our team is focused on supporting them during this difficult time."

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
