National Art Awards Honor 11 Local Students
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards recognized works of design, media and other art forms from the St. Andrew's School.
A national art and writing award alliance recognized 11 local students from in Edgewater for their work in media, design, poetry and other art forms.
Three of the students earned a “Gold Key” award while the other seven earned “Silver Key” awards, in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
The 11 students were selected out of approximately 6,500 entries from the northeast region of the country, according to a release by St. Andrew’s Day School.

“These works were judged to be in the top 15 percent, which reflects not only the talent of our students, but the level of sophistication offered by our art program,” Leslie Redwine, head of school, said in the release. “These awards demonstrate how dedicated these students are to their craft.”
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have been recognizing young artistic talent since 1923, with such winners as Andy Warhol and Robert Redford.

“Each year, more than 100 visual and literary-arts focuses organizations across the country bring the awards to local communities,” according to the release.
In the release, St. Andrew’s Day School’s art instructor Hayley Meyer said their philosophy of discipline-based art instruction helped the students shine on the national stage.
“The results are amazing, as evidenced by these awards,” according to Meyer.
