Police Investigate Linthicum Fatal Accident

A Linthicum man who stepped onto a roadway was struck Monday night by a vehicle driven by an Edgewater resident, according to Anne Arundel County police. The pedestrian later died at a hospital.

Investigators said the Edgewater driver was not able to avoid striking the man, and police did not announce any charges.

Shortly before 5:15 p.m., Nelson Bert Lehnert, 77, of Linthicum, stepped into a northbound lane of Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard and was struck by a Ford Explorer, according to police. He was reportedly outside of any nearby crosswalks or pedestrian control devices.

Paramedics transported Lehnert to University of Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore with what they believed to be "survivable injuries." Police said Lehnert's condition became worse at the hospital and he died at 9 p.m. on Monday.

Police said pedestrian error appears to be the primary factor. Alcohol and speed do not appear to be involved in the collision. An investigation is ongoing.
