Police Warn of 'Sporadic Burglaries' in South County
The Anne Arundel County Police Department said a series of burglaries since March 5 means south county residents should be alert for potential thieves.

A recent series of “sporadic daytime burglaries” in south county has led police to remind residents of simple safety tips that can prevent them from being victimized.
According to a release from the Anne Arundel County Police Department, a string of random burglaries has occurred in Lothian, Harwood, Shady Side, Dunkirk and Tracys Landing during the month of March.

“In most cases, sheds and garages, which were left unsecured, were targeted by suspects who targeted power tools and lawn equipment in those structures,” according to the release. “No suspect information has been developed at this time.”
As the spring season rolls in, residents should be on the lookout for scams or individuals who pretend to work for utility companies in order to gain access into homes, according to police.

When it comes to contractual work, police recommend the following:
- Get at least three estimates from three separate contractors
- Verify an employee’s status with the company
- Check to see if the company has a license in Maryland
- Be cautious of companies that require advance payments
- Always feel free to contact the Better Business Bureau to file complaints or report suspicious activity
- File consumer complaints with the Maryland Attorney General Consumer Protection Division for non-delivery of services
To avoid scams where individuals pretend to work for utility companies, police recommend the following:
- Cooperate with neighbors if you observe workers at their residence
- Be suspicious of workers who arrive unannounced or use unmarked vehicles
- Request identification and call the company to verify the individual’s status
To ensure that your property is safe, police recommend the following:
- Secure all outdoor property with a chain, or even better, in a garage
- Keep garages and sheds locked and always have the keys near you while working outside
- Keep windows and patio doors locked
- Report suspicious vehicles or individuals who seem out of place
