Top 5 Stories: Game-Winning Shot, Leap Year Baby

Recapping the biggest stories from Feb. 26 to March 3.

Covering news in Edgewater-Davidsonville is never boring, especially when you have an opportunity to get a behind-the-scene look at local legends or meet people with one-of-a-kind stories.

I was able to do lots of interesting articles this week, and here are my Top 5 stories from this past week.

The new building and land will not only allow the fire company to have more advanced technological equipment, it will help them respond to emergencies more quickly.

No. 2—Once every four years, leap year babies all over the world get to celebrate their “real birthday” on Feb. 29. For Shady Side’s , celebrating his special day on the actual day is always a special event.

On most years, he celebrates his birthday on Feb. 28. But he  into March when he can pull it off, Dennis said with a chuckle.

No. 3—After being puzzled while driving down Route 2 and noticing three seemingly , I decided to get to the bottom of what appeared to be a “fire engine graveyard.”

As it turned out, the giant machines are a . The fire engines all still run well. They all function just as they did in their hey-day. And occassionally, they even go for quick rides around the South River High School parking lot.

No. 4—South River’s girls basketball team pulled out a squeaker Wednesday night as it defeated Broadneck High .

Led by standout scorer Tiffany McKinney, , and are headed to the Class 4A East Region finals where they take on the same team that knocked them out last year, North Point High.

No. 5—Thursday morning got off to a rocky start when a while three firefighters were inside.

The engine was while they tended to an injured person, and had it not been there, things could have been a lot worse, said fire officials.

Only the driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries. The firefighters inside the fire engine were unharmed, according to authorities.
