Walker to Introduce ‘English as Official Language’ Bill

The District 7 Councilman will introduce his new bill at Monday's council meeting.

District 7 County Councilman Jerry Walker (R-7th District) plans to introduce a bill that would make English the official language of Anne Arundel County in Monday night’s council meeting

According to his spokeswoman, Pam Scarbro, the bill is not on the council’s agenda, but Walker will be introducing it and reading it into the record.

“It’s an issue [Walker] heard a lot about from voters,” Scarbro said. “[‘The English as Official Language' Bill] lit a fire. I’ve been getting calls from FOX News all day.”

According to the Baltimore Sun, the bill would require all official county documents to be in English.

“I wanted to make a statement of some kind to let folks know we’re not a sanctuary county,” Walker told The Sun. “If you’re here illegally, go where you’re welcome. You’re not welcome here.”

The Sun reported that the county’s Health Department spends more then $83,000 a year on translators, and the police department pays $1,000 for interpreting calls from non-English speakers.

Walker will be on FOX45 Tuesday morning around 7:20 a.m. to discuss his bill, Scarbro said.
