1 Man Shot, 2 Officers Injured When Police Track Down Suspects
Two officers were injured while arresting robbery suspects at a storage unit. The suspects rammed a police car and the driver was shot.
ELKRIDGE, MD — Two officers were injured and a suspect shot during an altercation between officers and a group of suspects. Howard County police officers had learned that a group of suspects wanted on open arrest warrants from other jurisdictions had stolen a large quantity of power tools and other merchandise from Lowe’s in Elkridge. At approximately 3 p.m. Monday, officers located the suspects in two vehicles and followed them to Life Storage in the 8200 block of Washington Boulevard in Jessup, where they saw the suspects with the stolen goods.
When Howard County police officers confronted the suspects, they tried to take off in a car and rammed the police vehicle. One officer fired one shot at the driver and struck him. The suspect, Donte Bernard Shaw, 31, of East Capitol Street in Washington, D.C., was taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and later released. He's been charged with two counts each of first-degree assault and second-degree assault against a law enforcement officer.
The officer involved in the shooting is a six-year veteran of the police department assigned to the repeat offender division. He has been placed on standard administrative leave during the investigation. He also was one of two officers injured while arresting three suspects. One officer was taken to Howard County General Hospital and the other was treated at the scene.

During searches conducted of the suspects' two vehicles, police located a loaded handgun in the vehicle driven by Shaw and two loaded handguns in the other vehicle. No other shots were fired at the scene. Shaw also was charged with weapon violations, theft and destruction of property. Taquan Neal, 32, of Brooks Drive in District Heights, and Percy Brown, 26, of Walker Mill Road in Capitol Heights were each charged with weapon violations and theft. George Shaw, 48, of Dawn Lane in Temple Hills, was charged with theft.
