An HCPSS middle school principal has been honored as a 2024 National Distinguished Principal.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Glenwood Middle School Principal Melissa Shindel has been named a 2024 National Distinguished Principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals.

Shindel was one of 37 principals—and one of only three at the middle school level—nationwide to achieve this distinction, which recognizes outstanding elementary and middle-level administrators for setting high standards for instruction, student achievement, character and climate for the students, families and staff in their learning communities.

“This award recognizes the hard work and passion that Melissa brings to her role on a daily basis. She works tirelessly to create a welcoming school environment, so all students, families, and staff feel included and valued,” said GMS Assistant Principal Heather Cassetta. “Melissa prioritizes the well-being and success of students and collaborates with staff and community members to build positive relationships. She is most deserving of this recognition.”
