Prosecutor: Molony's Life 'Ended at the Hands of His Wife'

Opening statements in the trial of an Ellicott City woman accused of killing her quadriplegic husband took place Tuesday at Howard County Circuit Court.

Howard County Assistant State's Attorney Colleen McGuinn told a courtroom during opening statements of the trial of Nancy Fleming Molony, 53, that Molony's husband's life was ended at her hands, according to Wayne Kirwan a spokesperson for the state's attorney's office.

McGuinn said that an autoposy revelead nine unabsorbed oxycodone pills in Kevin Patrick Molony's body as well as high levels of oxycodone already absorbed, according to Kirwan.

Nancy Molony is charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter and reckless endangerment.

Kevin Molony, 51, was seriously injured in a 2007 auto accident that left him quadriplegic. He was being cared for by family members and his wife, according to police. In February of 2011, he was found dead inside his Ellicott City home. Initially his death was not ruled a homicide, but after a police investigation his wife was indicted and charged with second-degree murder in his death.

Nancy Molony's defense attorney, Kimberly Alley, argued that Kevin Molony's addiction to painkillers led to his death, according to Kirwan. Alley stated that the medical examiner's office even amended their autoposy to change Kevin Molony's manner of death from homicide to "could not be determined," according to Kirwan.

But McGuinn stated that Kevin Molony was incapable of medicating himself due to the severity of his injuries, according to Kirwan.

The trial, which began Tuesday, is scheduled to take up to two weeks.
