Fundraiser Set to Help Family of Essex House Fire
The event is set for Sunday at Hawks Pleasure Club to assist David and Mary Falkner, whose home was destroyed in the April 14 blaze.
When Wes Hart heard of the fire that destroyed David and Mary Falkner's home last month, the Essex man decided he had to do something to help them.
That’s why Hart, along with community volunteer Wes Crockett, are organizing a fundraiser to assist the Falkner family, which lost everything in the fire. The family barely made it out of the home alive on the 600 block of Dorsey Ave. thanks to the Falkners’ grandson, Charley Knisley, who woke up and alerted his family to get out.
“I’ve known David Falkner for several years and he’s a good man,” Hart said. “Insurance may cover some things, but they were left with nothing. Dave’s wallet was even burned up in the fire.”

Hart, along with his two sons and Crockett, have organized an event set for 1-5 p.m. on Sunday at , 430 Riverside Drive. The cost is $20 per ticket and children 17 and younger are admitted for free. The donation includes admission, along with beef, hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, soda and beer.
There will also be a show from Rick Roberts of Patrick’s, live music and a car show right along the water. Hart said they also plan to honor Knisley for his heroic act the night of the fire. The 15-year-old Kenwood freshman was also recently for helping his family get out, which included catching his 10-year-old brother Colin as he jumped out a second-floor window.

“All too often we hear about something like this and just move on,” Hart said. “This is a chance to give back to your neighbor and your fellow man in need. It’s the right thing to do. This could have been a lot worse. If Charley hadn’t woke up in time, we would be at Connelly’s [Funeral Home] instead of planning this fundraiser to help them get back on their feet.”
Hart said those looking to help can purchase tickets or send donations to , 313 Mace Ave., Essex, MD. 21221. For more information, contact Hart at 410-682-5567 or Crockett at 410-574-7394.
