📰 News we're reading

1. New Treatment For HIV AIDS (wfmd.com) — Frederick County residents now have access to an HIV treatment option that uses an injection every other month instead of a daily pill, though it’s only available through specialists in Baltimore or Hagerstown. The Frederick County Health Department still plays a key role with free HIV testing at its Montevue Lane office and support navigating insurance, while urging sexually active and IV drug-using residents to get screened regularly.

2. Some Frederick County public schools will install cameras in classrooms as part of a pilot program. (cbsnews.com) — Classrooms in select Frederick County Public Schools will get video-only cameras starting January 20, 2026, as part of a grant-funded pilot focused on safety and transparency for vulnerable students. District leaders stress the footage won’t include audio, will stay on a secure network, and is intended to support—not surveil—students and staff while families receive clear access and privacy details.

3. Workers at another Maryland library system gain a voice at work through Council 3 (afscme.org) — Library staff across Frederick County Public Libraries have officially unionized with AFSCME Council 3 after an arbitrator certified majority support, giving about 200 workers a stronger voice on pay, staffing, and job protections. Organizers say they hope better wages will let more employees afford to live in the community they serve while improving retention and services for Frederick residents.

4. Burglar peels plexiglass off of door to rob vape shop in Frederick, police say (fox5dc.com) — Frederick police are asking for the public’s help after a burglar peeled plexiglass off the door of Smoke 10 on Thomas Johnson Drive, then stole more than $500 in vape products and caused over $2,000 in damage. The break-in happened Nov. 17, and investigators are circulating surveillance video while urging anyone with information to contact them.

5. Wish kid flips over meeting Simone Biles (wtop.com) — An 11-year-old gymnast from Frederick is sharing how a Make-A-Wish trip to meet her hero, Simone Biles, lifted her spirits while she manages life with cystic fibrosis and a military family’s frequent moves. Her experience at a gymnastics camp with Biles left her determined to reach the Olympics and inspire others facing similar challenges.
