'An American Daughter' Coming to Arts Barn

Arts on the Green and Montgomery Playhouse present the play from May 12-28 with performances on Fridays-Sundays.

From the City of Gaithersburg: In partnership with Montgomery Playhouse, Arts on the Green presents An American Daughter by Wendy Wasserstein, a comic, moving play about the pitfalls that await political appointees. The show runs May 12 through 28, 2017, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. at the Arts Barn, 311 Kent Square Road. Please note there is no performance on Sunday, May 21 and there is an added performance on Thursday, May 18 at 8 p.m. Admission is $20. This show is recommended for ages 15 and older.

As a respected health crusader and devoted wife and mother, Dr. Lyssa Hughes seems perfect for the role of U.S. Surgeon General, until a chance remark at a fashionable brunch sets off a media feeding frenzy.

"Political comedies are unusual if only because dramatists rarely seem to take politics seriously enough to make fun of it,” says the New York Post. “Wendy Wasserstein is obviously an exception, for in An American Daughter she is making a distinct and often amusing attempt to expose that soft underbelly of American political life, its media awareness and its consequent confusion of public opinion polls with democracy.”
