Applications for Vacant City Council Position Being Evaluated

The Gaithersburg City Council is currently seeking to fill the position left vacant by the passing of Henry Marraffa.

From The City of Gaithersburg: The Gaithersburg City Council is currently in the process of evaluating 12 applications for the City Council position left vacant by the passing of Henry Marraffa on October 18, 2016.


It is anticipated that an Executive Session will be held on December 12, 2016, to narrow the selection of candidates to no more than five. Selected candidates will then be invited to each deliver a three-minute statement at the Mayor and City Council Work Session on January 23, 2017, and participate in evening interviews with City Council Members, tentatively scheduled for January 26.

Selection of the new City Council Member will take place in Executive Session on February 6, with the swearing-in taking place on February 8, to be immediately followed by a reception in the City Hall Gallery. The selected Council Member will serve until the next municipal election on November 7, 2017.

The applicants are Jennifer R. Allen, Niles Anderegg, Richard L. Arkin, Jose M. Contreras, Joshua D. Fischer, Helen M. Imbernino, James F. McNulty, Yvette D. Monroe, Karen W. Norris, James Rolfes,
Laurie-Anne Sayles, and Kenneth J. Smondrowski. Their applications can be viewed on the City’s website at www.gaithersburgmd.gov.

Section 35 of the City Code allows for the City Council to select individuals to fill vacancies for Mayor and City Council, but also provides for public petition for a special election for either or both of these appointed positions. The petition must contain the signatures of at least twenty percent of the registered voters in Gaithersburg and be received within 30 days of an appointment. Please see the City Code details.
