County To Reimburse Residents For Security Cameras In High-Crime Areas

GAITHERSBURG, MD — Montgomery County residents and business owners in some high-crime areas are eligible for rebates if they purchase a security camera for their property, the county council said.

The goal is to reduce crime and give police another tool to both prevent and solve crimes.

The county is offering to reimburse resident up to $250 per camera, while eligible businesses and nonprofits may receive up to $1,250. A total of 1,000 cameras are eligible for the program.

To be eligible for the camera reimbursement, residents must live in designated ZIP codes. Generally, those areas include parts of Gaithersburg, Germantown, North Bethesda, Wheaton, Olney, Damascus and the Route 29 corridor, Montgomery Community Media said.

“These security camera rebates will help our residents and businesses protect their homes, establishments, and communities,” said County Executive Marc Elrich in a statement. “Security cameras can deter as well as solve crimes. This program will improve public safety in MCPD’s priority areas. I appreciate the Montgomery County Council for passing this legislation and encourage all eligible residents and businesses to apply for these rebates.”

Besides the security cameras, the county also uses car license plate readers and drones to fight crime.

Elrich said police will not view any security camera footage live, but will contact homeowners and businesses owners if a crime occurred nearby or if suspicious activity is noted to obtain the footage.

"This program not only empowers residents and business owners but also establishes a collaborative partnership between our community and law enforcement,” said Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones. “By installing surveillance cameras, participants can actively assist law enforcement in ensuring public safety. Together, we are fostering a more secure community."
