On November 7th, Gaithersburg residents will have the opportunity to vote for three City Council members. There are six candidates running, including the author of this article, Daniel Lukomsky. This is a crucial election, as the decisions made by the City Council will have a significant impact on our daily lives.
Local elections often have a lower turnout than national elections, but they are just as important. The City Council makes decisions about a wide range of issues, including:

  • Public safety: The City Council oversees the Gaithersburg Police Department and also sets policies related to crime prevention and public safety.
  • Development: The City Council decides where new housing and businesses will be built, and how they will be designed. This can have a major impact on the character of our city and the quality of life for residents.
  • Transportation: The City Council is responsible for planning and maintaining our transportation system, including roads, sidewalks, and bike lanes. The Council also decides how to allocate funding.
  • Education: The City Council works closely with Montgomery County Public Schools to ensure that Gaithersburg students have access to a high-quality education.

In addition to these major issues, the City Council also makes decisions about a variety of other matters, such as parks and recreation, environmental protection, and social services.

It is important to vote in local elections because the decisions made by the City Council have a direct impact on our daily lives. By voting, you have the power to shape the future of Gaithersburg.

  • Register to vote. If you are not already registered to vote, you can register online at vote.md.gov or in person at the Bohrer Activity Center (on the day of the election).
  • Do your research. Learn about the candidates and their positions on the issues that are important to you. You can find information about the candidates on the City of Gaithersburg website and on the websites of the candidates themselves.
  • Make a plan to vote. Decide where and when you will vote. Polls will be open from 7am to 8pm on Election Day.
  • Encourage your friends and family to vote. The more people who vote, the stronger our democracy will be.

Voting is a right and a responsibility. It is the best way to make your voice heard and to help shape the future of Gaithersburg.
I urge all Gaithersburg residents to vote on November 7th. It is the best way to make sure that your voice is heard and that our city is governed in a way that reflects the values of our community.
