Gaithersburg Mom Turns Her Husband, Four Kids and Dog Into Comic Book

Cindy Goh turned her family into a comic series called Samuelism and will be signing books at Kung Fu Tea on Feb. 11.

From Samuelism: Cindy Goh of Gaithersburg, Md., is a stay-at-home mom to four quirky kids with big personalities. Three years ago, the mother/graphic artist started documenting her kids’ quotes in comic strips, while her web developer husband posted them on a website, Samuelism.com. After collecting years of comic strips and building a following that includes more than 1,500 page likes on Facebook, the website became Samuelism: C Starts With Cookie, a 100+ page full-color book of humorous light-hearted conversations and family memories, seen through the eyes of the artist, Cindy Goh. The book debuted on Amazon.com in the #1 spot for hot new releases in comic strips.

“I love being home with the kids, but sometimes I would feel like I’m doing the same thing over and over again. The comic was a way for me to get out of the mundane day-to-day routine,” she explained, “I hope that doesn’t make me sound like a bad mom.”

By turning her everyday mom experiences into comics, Cindy makes light of her life as a parent to the delight of her readers. “Parenting isn’t easy,” she added, “but sometimes it can be really funny.”

The cast of characters consist of Mom, Dad, Samuel, Nathan, Jordyn, and Rylee. Mom is generally sleep-deprived, overworked, and largely depended on by her four kids. Dad attempts to be the head of the household but is clearly subject to the real boss of the family, Rylee, who is the fourth child and the baby. Jordyn is Rylee’s older sister, who plays the role of the sweet young girl in love with unicorns and butterflies. Nathan is the athletic, level-headed pre-teen oldest brother, and last but certainly not least is Samuel. Samuel is the opinionated, sensitive young boy who is often perplexed by the adult world. Many of the comics are Samuel’s actual conversations with his siblings, mother, and father.

The artist/writer Cindy Goh, accompanied by Samuel, will be hosting a signing event at Kung Fu Tea in Rockville, MD on Saturday, Feb. 11th 11am-1:30pm. Visit Samuelism.com for more details.
