Gaithersburg Softball Last Local Team Standing

Of the 10 different varsity teams from , and to qualify for the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association playoffs, only Gaithersburg's varsity softball team remains.

The No. 4 Trojans host No. 8 Northwest at Kelly Park Thursday at 4 p.m. in the 4A West Region semifinals. The winner will face No. 3 Magruder Friday in the regional final.

Here's a rundown of how the rest of the Gaithersburg-area athletes fared in their respective state tournaments:

Gaithersburg High School

• Boy's Lacrosse: No. 9 seed, eliminated by No. 8 Thomas Johnson, 10-4, in first round of the playoffs.
• Girl's Lacrosse: No. 7 seed, eliminated by No. 10 Northwest, 17-9, in first round of the playoffs.
• Baseball: No. 9 seed, defeated No. 8 Clarksburg, 6-1, in first round of the playoffs. Eliminated by No. 1 Whitman, 8-6, in regional quarterfinal.

Quince Orchard High School

• Boy's Lacrosse: No. 11 seed, defeated No. 6 Magruder, 27-2, in first round of the playoffs. Defeated No. 3 Clarksburg, 11-2, in regional quarterfinal. Eliminated by No. 10 Urbana, 13-4, in regional semifinal.
• Girl's Lacrosse: No. 1 seed (first round bye), defeated No. 9 Richard Montgomery, 11-10, in regional quarterfinal. Eliminated by No. 4 Howard, 18-4 in regional semifinal.
• Baseball: No. 2 seed (first round bye), defeated No. 7 Churchill, 5-4, in regional quarterfinal. Eliminated by No. 6 Northwest, 4-3, in regional semifinal.
• Softball: No. 12 seed, eliminated by No. 5 Whitman, 5-2, in first round.

Watkins Mill High School

• Boy's Lacrosse: No. 12 seed, eliminated by No. 5 Richard Montgomery, 8-7 in first round.
• Girl's Lacrosse: No. 3 seed (first round bye), eliminated by No. 6 Urbana, 19-9 in regional quarterfinal.
