Gas Leak Disrupts Construction On New Shady Grove Hospital Cancer Facility

MCFRS: A 2-inch gas line was struck by construction workers Wednesday morning at the site of the Aquilino Cancer Center.

A gas leak Wednesday morning at the construction site of a new cancer center at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital caused work to come to a hault and forced an evacuation, a Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson told Patch.

MCFRS officials were dispatched at about 7:17 a.m. to 9905 Medical Center Drive for the report of a 2-inch gas line struck by construction workers, MCFRS spokesperson Beth Anne Nesselt said.

The area was evacuated and secured by MCFRS until representatives from the utility company arrived on the scene to clamp the line, Nesselt said.

The leak occurred at the construction site of Shady Grove Adventist's Aquilino Cancer Center, which is slated to open in Fall 2013.

Adventist HealthCare spokesperson Susan Griffiths said the gas line was immediately shut off and repairs began within 10 minutes.

"There was no impact on the rest of the [Shady Grove hospital] campus or on the construction project for the cancer center," Griffiths said. "Work continues at this time."
