Well, the heat wave is coming- it is confirmed that this weekend, including Friday, will be hot and humid, with temperatures in the 90’s; with humidity it will feel like ten degrees more. This wave will break on Monday, with cooler temperatures and rains. Here are a few tips to stay cool and safe this weekend:

  • Stay indoors as much as possible. Visit Gaithersburg library, or large stores like Target or Dicks in RIO- these will keep you entertained for a bit. If you have access to a pool, go there in the morning or early evening, when you can enjoy the shade.
  • Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. This will help your body stay cool. If you want to include some physical activity like walking or biking, do so really early or late in the afternoon, when there is no burning sun.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Avoid sugary drinks, as they can dehydrate you.
  • Take cool showers or baths. This will help your body temperature drop.
  • Use a fan or air conditioner to stay cool. If your air conditioner is acting up, use the old-school trick of setting a fan in front of a bowl of ice.
  • Check on elderly neighbors and relatives. Make sure they have access to cool air and plenty of fluids. Seniors, young children, and people with chronic health conditions are more vulnerable to heat-related illness.
  • Be aware of the signs of heat-related illness. Heat-related illness can range from mild (heat cramps) to severe (heat stroke). If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention immediately:
    • Heavy sweating
    • Cold, clammy skin
    • Dizziness
    • Headache
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Muscle cramps
    • Confusion
    • Fainting

By following these tips, you can stay cool and safe during this weekend. Do not forget your pets- most of them do not do well in heat as well.
