GAITHERSBURG, MD — Former Gaithersburg resident and Bullis School football player Dwayne Haskins Jr., 24, was fatally hit by a dump truck Saturday morning while trying to cross a highway in Florida where he was training with his teammates, ESPN reported.

Haskins was currently quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, following two years playing for the Washington Commanders. He joined the football team at Ohio State after playing at Potomac's Bullis School when he was a teenager. Haskins lived in Gaithersburg when he was in high school, the mayor said.

"This is so sad. Dwayne spent his high school years living in Gaithersburg, literally two doors down from me," said Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman on Twitter. "Lovely young man who I always rooted for. Condolences to his wonderful family & all his friends and fans."

Haskins graduated from Bullis in 2016. His sister, Tamia, graduated in 2019, according to a letter from the school extending its sympathies.

"Dwayne was known as a standout athlete at Bullis, Ohio State, and in the NFL, and here at Bullis we also knew him as an honorable, smart, and family-oriented young man who graduated from college in three years," said Bullis' Head of School Christian G. Sullivan, in a letter to the community. "His loss will be felt deeply by so many people."

Haskins is survived by his wife, Kalabrya, his parents, Dwayne Sr. and Tamara, and his sister, the letter said.

"I also want to acknowledge the pain and loss that many of his classmates and their families, our alumni, teachers, and coaches are now feeling," said Sullivan. "Our faculty care deeply for all our students, past and present, and the passing of Dwayne will bring despair to many. To all of you who helped him here at Bullis, I thank you deeply."

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin said in a statement that Haskins quickly became a part of the Steelers family and was one of its hardest workers.

"Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a tremendous friend to so many. I am truly heartbroken," said Tomlin. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Kalabrya, and his entire family during this difficult time."
