$200,000 Worth of Damage in Off-Campus College House Fire

A College Park house rented by six University of Maryland students suffered a major fire over the weekend, according the Prince George’s County Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at 7400 block of Dartmouth Avenue around 4:30 a.m. Saturday. A heavy fire could be seen coming from the two-story, 1,600-square-foot house, PGFD reports.

The six students were awoken by smoke alarms in the home and safely got out without any injuries before officials arrived. Firefighters entered the house but then were removed when it was determined that the fire was burning so intensely that their safety was in jeopardy.

The PGFD extinguished the fire within 45 minutes of arrival. One firefighter was transported to the Burn Unit at MedStar Washington Hospital Center for minor burn injuries to both wrists.

The fire caused about $200,000 worth of loss and the County Citizen Services Unit along with the American Red Cross are helping to find the displaced students temporary shelter.

Officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
