City Council Goes Over Speed Camera Locations

Greenbelt City Council deliberated on establishing school zones and discussed where to position the city's new speed cameras at its regular meeting Monday.

There are locations near schools where a large number of motorists are speeding, according to Greenbelt City Manager Michael McLaughlin's July 18 memo to council. Staff recommended council locate cameras in five specific areas after Brekford, a city contractor, surveyed the number of speeding violations in a 48 hour period while schools were still in session.

Potential Locations for Speed Cameras 

• Crescent Rd. between Northway and Greenhill
• 7700 block of Hanover Pkwy.
• 7700 block of Mandan Rd.
• Edmonston Road at Springhill Ct.
• 5900 Cherrywood Lane

Council voted 5-2 to suspend the rules, opening the way for it to hold the first reading, second reading and vote on the school zone and speed camera legislation, all in one meeting. Councilmember Rodney Roberts and Councilmember Konrad Herling voted against suspending the rules.

The school's being considered for half-mile school zone designations where speed cameras may be located are:

• Eleanor Roosevelt High School
• Greenbelt Middle School
• Greenbelt Elementary School
• Springhill Lake Elementary School
• Turning Point Academy

After council introduced and partially discussed the resolution, City Solicitor Robert Manzi advised that it takes six votes to suspend the rules. Being shy one vote, council said it would take up the legislation again at its first meeting in September. Council's next regular meeting is scheduled for Sept. 10.
