Get Out: Memorial Day Events in Greenbelt

There's no need to travel far for Memorial Day -- we've got a lot going on right here.

THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY, May 26 through May 29

Start off the weekend by seeing the play "And then There Were None," at the located at 123 Centerway in the Roosevelt Center. Based on an Agatha Christie novel, the guest production from Thunderous Productions is here for one weekend only, so catch it while you can. Directed by Rick Starkweather, the play brings 10 people together for a weekend holiday on a remote island. As one by one, people start to disappear, the guests come to the conclusion that the murderer is one of them.

Showtimes: May 26, 27, 28 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 29 at 2:00 p.m.

SATURDAY, May 28

Stop by the in the Roosevelt Center to hear classical guitarist Bruce Kritt playing from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by jazz and blues piano by from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the Joy Bodycomb Band closing out the night, playing blues, rock, country and a touch of jazz from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

While you're there, try out some of Chef Karim and Maria's Lebanese specialties with a Mediterranean flair or enjoy some drinks at the bar.

Don't forget to look around, "Gardens: Messages of Mother Earth," a collection of works by local artists is on display in the New Deal. It includes poetry plus visual and garden art, through June 22.

SUNDAY, May 29

The Greenbelt American Legion Post #136 starts the day with a 7 a.m. breakfast (open to guests). It's for Rolling Thunder, who will grab a meal before they head out to the Tidal Basin for their annual Memorial Day Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally. Although the motorcyclists will eat in the Banquet Hall and guests will dine in the restaurant, guests can watch Rolling Thunder as they head out for the rally.  If you want to catch Rolling Thunder, though, eat quick, because they're often out of there by 8:15 a.m. or before.

Rolling Thunder is expected back at the Legion anywhere from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., where the Legion will have its annual picnic, open to guests, with DJ Ronnie Gould. Prices vary depending on meal selection.

Later in the day, you can drop by the New Deal Cafe for its trifecta of music, art and food. The evening's music will feature the Kim Reynolds Quartet jazz combo from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Kim focuses on piano and Hammond B-3 organ music, with a traditional, classic, all American rock and roll, blues, boogie-woogie, jazz and country feel. 

If you're not in the mood for music, how about some soccer? Adult Greenbelt drop-in soccer is looking for some new players. It's informal, and they currently meet at Northway ball fields on Sundays. The two Northway fields are located at the end of Northway Road. The entrance is at the intersection of Northway Road and Ridge Road. Correction: Jonathan Murray said the group decided to call the game off for this Sunday due to the holiday. MONDAY, MAY 30, MEMORIAL DAY

At 10:00 a.m., American Legion Post #136 will hold its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Roosevelt Center. All residents are invited to come and bring friends to the solemn remembrance and traditional service honoring American military men and women who sacrificed their blood and lives for their country. Following the service all are invited back to the American Legion for an open house gathering.
