Public Works Is Recruiting Tree Protection Volunteers
Be a part of a service-learning opportunity in honor of MLK, Jr. National Day of Service on January 18.
What? Be a part of a community tree protection event in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service!
Volunteers will meet inside of the Public Works Department for a brief orientation starting at 10:30 am. Enjoy free bagels and hot beverages served courtesy of Bagel Place of College Park. Public Works employees will lead an educational presentation about beavers, their role in the ecosystem, and why they have become a problem in Buddy Attick Park.
After a brief orientation, Public Works employees will guide volunteers towards Greenbelt Lake where they will learn about the natural, created, and managed landscape features at Buddy Attick Park. Upon arriving at the service site, volunteers will learn how to coexist with beavers by placing wire caging around the trunks of slow-growth trees. In addition, Public Works staff will teach volunteers how to protect the forest from invasive species takeover by removing English ivy with hand shears. The event will conclude with a reflection and group picture in front of the lake. Last year, over 30 volunteers attended the event to protect 70 trees from beavers and English ivy.
