Meadowvale Annex Briefly Closed Wednesday

HVAC malfunction temporarily displaced third grade students at elementary school

A malfunction in the HVAC system at Meadowvale Elementary School temporarily shut down part of the campus Wednesday morning.

The annex building—most commonly known to the community as the “kindergarten building”—was closed to students after an odor of gas was detected by school personnel. The four-classroom building, located to the back left of the main building, houses the school's third grade.

“The school personnel smelled a gas odor outside the annex building as students were arriving,” Harford County Public Schools Manager of Communications Teri Kranefeld said in an e-mail to Patch. “The students were never allowed to enter the building, instead they were redirected to the cafeteria until the Fire Department, BGE and our Facilities Department could investigate.”

The Susquehanna Hose Company responded, and alerted BGE. Officials ruled out any gas leaks.

According to Kranefeld, the building was cleared shortly after crews arrived, and students were let back into the annex building.
