Warriors Girls Soccer Wins, Looks For More

Havre de Grace's girls soccer team is off to a strong start—already equalling the number of wins the program earned over the past four years combined.

The Warriors defeated Perryville, 1-0, in a physical game Monday night, breaking through on Rachel Rossi's goal with 16 minutes remaining. The sophomore drove home a rebound amid a flurry of shots in front of the Perryville goal.

"It was just hard aggression, attacking the goal. It was nothing pretty. We finally pushed it through," Warriors coach Randy Cypher said.

Cypher said the Warriors created a number of shots Monday, though many were at the Perryville keeper, or not on goal.

Havre de Grace goalkeeper Riley Arnold made 14 saves.

"It was a hard fought victory. Their hard work this summer is paying off," Cypher said.

For the Warriors, its the first win of the season, though Cypher said he envisions some more wins in an upcoming stretch. This year's initial win was just the second for the program in the past four-plus seasons.

Havre de Grace won last year for the first time in four years.

"For some of the seniors it was the only victory of their whole career. It was nice to get the monkey off their back," Cypher said of last season's break-through.

The future is bright for the young Warriors, who are backed by a JV team that won, 7-0, on Monday night.

"The pressure isn't as intense [this year]," Cypher said.

The Warriors visit Joppatowne at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
