WMAR Covers Fire, Highlights Phelan

ABC 2 News was in Havre de Grace Tuesday morning covering the aftermath of the Franklin Street fire, and interviewed SHCO firefighter Tom Phelan.

Havre de Grace resident and Susquehanna Hose Company firefighter Tom Phelan was recognized Wednesday as WMAR ABC 2 News was in town to cover Tuesday's fire on Franklin Street.

Susquehanna Hose Company Chief Scott Hurst credited Phelan with his outstanding efforts in helping save three people. Phelan was the first responder, beating the SHCO trucks—which began to arrive within 60 seconds of the first call—to the scene. Before trucks arrived, Phelan assisted two tenants from the second floor roof before breaking into the burning building to rescue another tenant.

The fire at 518 Franklin Street caused an estimated $900,000 combined damage to the physical structure and its contents. The blaze took place Monday night, and took roughly 70 firefighters 15 minutes to extinguish, according to Susquehanna Hose Company Chief Scott Hurst.

The State Fire Marshal's initial report indicated the preliminary cause of the fire might have been a malfunctioning baseboard heater.
