Habitat for Humanity Dedicates First Two Homes in Prince George’s County

Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland welcomes two new families home.

Hyattsville, MD— On Saturday, June 18th, 2016, Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland, Inc. (HFHMM) hosted around 50 members of the community as they dedicated their first two homes in Prince George’s County.
With construction completed, volunteers, community supporters, sponsors, and friends of the families, joined together to ceremoniously welcome each new family into their new home. This celebration allowed individuals from throughout the community to tour the homes and visit with Habitat staff, families, and volunteers.
HFHMM’s mission is to provide affordable housing solutions to low-income families living or working in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. The new homeowners applied for these homes and went through a homeownership process facilitated through HFHMM. They qualified based on their income, as HFHMM serves families making between 30 – 60% of Area Median Income (AMI), and completed all the of the homeownership requirements including, sweat-equity, homebuyer education workshops, and financial literacy classes.
The two homes, located in Hyattsville, were vacant and foreclosed properties, which HFHMM purchased and rehabilitated.
When asked about how his new home will change the lives of his family, one of the new homeowners said, “I am so blessed and thankful to go through this process and purchase the house with a 0% interest rate; this is a life time opportunity for me and my family. The kids…are so happy. Every day they ask about the basement, backyard, what color can they paint their rooms. I told them whatever they want, they’re going to have it soon”.
