Walter Johnson Students Named Top Fundraisers In High School Challenge

Students continued the seven-year reign as the top fundraisers in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's High School Challenge.

Students from raised more than $58,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society this year, making them the top fundraisers out of 14 schools.

WJ students have taken the lead seven years in a row— their total topping $170,000.

"We are all very proud of our students and the wonderful way the come together for such a great cause each year," Principal Jennifer Baker said. "We have a remarkable community that really wants to make a difference. Our students are to be commended for their efforts to help others."

Student Government President Jake Karlin said the Pennies for Patients fundraiser has become an important tradition at WJ.

“I have no doubt that future Walter Johnson students will stay committed to the cause, it's part of what makes Walter Johnson so great," Karlin said. "Every year we find a way to raise more than we did the year before, and I look forward to seeing how Walter Johnson tops our efforts from this year.”

Walt Whitman High School was the 2012 High School Challenge runner-up, raising a total of $51,000. In total all 14 schools raised over $151,000.

Gabrielle Urquhart, Executive Director for the National Capital Area Chapter, said these high schoolers extraordinary efforts show that people can make a difference at any age.

“Every year, students throughout the region use their creativity to raise awareness and funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, showing that every penny counts in the fight against blood cancers,” Urquhart said.

Walter Johnson will be rewarded with a pep rally attended by Hot 99.5 DJ Samy on April 13. Whitman will also be rewarded with a pep rally to celebrate their accomplishments.
