Air Fryer May Have Sparked $75K Wheaton Fire: Officials

An air fryer likely caused a kitchen fire that caused $75,000 damage to a Wheaton townhouse, Montgomery County fire officials said.

WHEATON, MD — An air fryer left unattended caused a kitchen fire in a Wheaton townhouse that displaced two adults and caused an estimated $75,000 in damage, according to Montgomery County officials.

Crews from Montgomery County Fire were called about 6:50 p.m. Sunday to the 2800 block of Schoolhouse Circle, near Viers Mill Road, when smoke was reported coming from the three-level townhome.

The fire was in a kitchen on the second floor of the townhouse.

Pete Piringer, spokesman for the fire department, said on social media that the fire began in the kitchen and was likely caused by unattended food cooking or warming in an air fryer.

No injuries were reported in the mishap.
