1st Black Mayor Elected In Laurel During Nov. 7 Race

Laurel voters have elected their first Black mayor. The official results were released Wednesday night.

The Board of Elections Supervisors will present the official votes to the current council at a special meeting on Thursday at 6 p.m. The new mayor and city council members will be sworn in on Nov. 27 at 6 p.m.

LAUREL, MD — Residents headed to the polls to elect officials on the city council and to choose a mayor. On Tuesday, voters made history in Laurel.

Unofficial vote counts for the city of Laurel elections held Nov. 7 were released later that day and the mail-in and provisional ballots were counted at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The official election results were released Wednesday night.

Mayor-elect Keith Sydnor made history as he becomes the city of Laurel’s first Black mayor. Five-term Mayor Craig A Moe did not run for re-election this year.

“I think Keith is going to do a great job for the city. He’s worked very hard for the city over the years. He’s got a great vision. He’s disciplined. He’s high integrity and he’s ready to work with the community,” Moe said.

Sydnor said he is proud to have gotten the support of so many people in the community, and he is ready to roll up his sleeves and get to work.

“This is one of the biggest races in the city of Laurel. I’m just looking forward to working with
the new council and just moving the city forward like we promised to do,” Sydnor said.
