Laurel Lottery Player Is Maryland's New Millionaire

LAUREL, MD — A Laurel man calling himself “Happy Trails” raced to Maryland Lottery headquarters to claim the first $1 million top prize on the Cash Explosion scratch-off, according to a news release. The construction worker told Lottery officials he immediately pictured himself on vacation after winning the huge prize and having happy trails ahead.

The 43-year-old found his Lottery luck when he stopped to purchase scratch-offs after running errands. He bought several scratch-offs at the 24 Seven Convenience Store in Laurel, including three $20 Cash Explosion instant tickets, and returned to his car. When he revealed a money bag symbol over a $1,000,000 prize, he nearly blew a gasket.

“At first I wasn’t convinced that it was real, but shortly after I was on the road and headed to the Lottery office,” he said in a Lottery news release.

The man opted to receive his prize in a lump sum. He plans to use the winnings to pay down debt and may surprise his wife with a trip to the Caribbean.

For selling a top-prize scratch-off in the game, 24 Seven Convenience Store will earn a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery.
