Code blue is in effect for employees, meaning essential personnel should report on time and there is liberal leave for non-essential staff. School officials say that non-essential, school-based staff (including teachers) don’t need to report and do not need to use liberal leave.

City agencies and school personnel continue working to clear school buildings and surrounding streets so that students and staff may safely return, according to a statement from the school system.

A note to residents on shoveling: Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced that inspectors will now be fining residents who have not shoveled their sidewalks. It does not matter whether one’s street has been plowed, she said; it is essential for people to shovel sidewalks so citizens can access public transportation and other roads. There must be a 2-foot path for people to get through, Housing Commissioner Paul Graziano told WBAL Radio. Homeowners may be fined $50, and commercial property owners face $100 fines for not clearing sidewalks.
