Be Well, B’ More recognized by Spotlight Award Mention

Baltimore's Billion Step Challenge recognized for achievement in bettering Baltimore health with Spotlight Award.

Did you know 23.8 percent of Maryland’s adults reported not participating in any outside physical activity during the past month (CDC)? Baltimore’s own nonprofit, Billion Step Challenge, has made it their priority to decrease this statistic and increase physical activity among the 620,000 residents.

Because of what the Billion Step Challenge has accomplished, they have been recognized as a Spotlight Award Honorable Mention in the Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge and received $10,000 to further support their program. The Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge empowers communities to make a positive health impact in their neighborhoods through collaborative partnerships and innovative solutions for pressing health issues.

The Billion Step Challenge is continuing to make strides to reach their goals and are rolling out new events throughout the year like Lunch Moves, a collaboration where downtown employees have a chance to get active on their lunch breaks by participating in free fitness classes, organized runs with the Mayor, billion step challenges, basketball tournaments, female self-defense workshops and free fitness classes. These programs not only encourage daily physical activity but also promote unity among the residents. By utilizing the city’s outdoor spaces like never before the Billion Step Challenge has been able to bring Baltimore citizens together in a way that was never expected.
