Public Works Warns Against Opening Fire Hydrants

The city also warned residents not to swim in its reservoirs.

As the heat is expected to reach into the 90s this week, the Baltimore City Department of Public Works is reminding residents that it is illegal to open fire hydrants or swim in reservoirs.

Those caught swimming in Prettyboy; Loch Raven; Liberty; Ashburton; Druid Lake; and Lake Montebello reservoirs could be charged with trespassing, fined $1,000 and jailed. Residents who open fire hydrants may be fined $500 and imprisoned up to six months, according to a news release.

The department says that opening hydrants and swimming in the reservoirs are dangerous. Opening a fire hydrant releases 1,000 gallons of water per minute and the pressure could injure or kill someone. The reservoirs are considered dangerous to swim in  because of cold temperatures at greater depths and currents, according to a news release.
