5K Race Raises $8,500 for Community Center
The community center on Reece Road is scheduled to break ground in February.
The Severn Community Health and Wellness Center got a big day of support on Saturday, as runners raised more than $8,500 during a 5k race and fun run.
The Building Hope Run brought 40 runners and walkers to Kinder Farm Park.
Thirteen-year-old Tori Bates was the top fundraiser, pulling in $600 for the cause along with her teammates from Integrity Lacrosse. Bates' mother, Suzanne Bates-Crandall, is in charge of the community center project with People's Community Health Centers.
The Severn Community Health and Wellness Center is scheduled to break ground next year on a plot of land near Van Bokkelen Elementary School in Severn. The center will have a health component and a community center with recreation activities, classes and career assistance.
The health and wellness center is being paid for with donations as well as a mix of federal, state and local funds. It recently landed a $1.9 million grant derived from state casino funds.
