Accident, Fuel Spill Closes I-97

The road was back open by about 8 a.m. Monday after the accident involving a tractor trailer led to the spillage of 100 gallons of fuel.

An early morning accident on I-97 near Route 32 Monday resulted in 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the roadway and two people hospitalized.

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department said the accident happened at about 3:45 a.m. and involve a tractor trailer and one other vehicle. 

A 53-year-old man was rushed to Shock Trauma with serious but non-life threatening injuries, department spokesman Keith Swindle said. Another person of unknown age or sex was treated at Baltimore Washington Medical Center with minor injuries. 

The roadway was closed for several hours, but re-opened Monday morning by about 8 a.m. Officials from the Maryland Department of Environment were on the scene to lead efforts to clean up the fuel spill.
