Upon conclusion of testimony, Amnesty International is asking federal officials to drop the most serious charge against Pfc. Bradley Manning, aiding the enemy.
“We’ve now seen the evidence presented by both sides, and it’s abundantly clear that the charge of ‘aiding the enemy’ has no basis. The government should withdraw that charge,” Widney Brown, senior director for international law and policy, said in a release.
Manning is facing a court martial at Fort Meade. Aiding the enemy carries a possible life sentence, the Associated Press reports. His lawyers have also asked the military judge to acquit on that charge and six others, according to the report.
A charge of leaking intelligence to a classified enemy was withdrawn last week.
Manning is accused of leaking more than 200,000 State Department cables and other classified video and documents to the website WikiLeaks.
