UPDATE: Fort Meade Boosts Gate Security Following Navy Yard Shooting

UPDATED: 1:27 p.m. Fort Meade officials have increased security measures at gates of the installation in response to the deadly shooting at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC. 

The installation said there was no specific threat at Fort Meade, but that officials were operating "out of an abundance of caution." 

"Visitors to Fort Meade may experience delays as they attempt to enter the installation," Installation Commander Col. Brian Foley said. "As the events at the Navy Yard unfold, we will remain focused on the safety and security of everyone on Fort Meade. We ask that everyone remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local authorities. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families of those that have lost their lives and who have been injured in this tragic event."

Members of Maryland's Congressional delegation were on Fort Meade Monday morning as news of a shooting at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC, trickled in. 

A ceremony to open a new wellness center on Fort Meade went on as planned, with Sens. Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin (D-MD) present along with Rep. John Sarbanes (D-3rd District).

Multiple people were reportedly killed Monday morning at the Navy Yard in a shooting incident that remains under investigation.
