Gambrills Businesses Award Scholarship

Ray Joyce, a senior at Arundel High, won the first Gambrills Crossroads Scholarship for his interest in small business.

A group of Gambrills businesses has awarded a $1,000 scholarship to an Arundel High student for his interest in pursuing a career in business. 

Ray Joyce, a senior at Arundel, won the first Gambrills Crossroads Scholarship after demonstrating an interest and knowledge of small business.

Joyce said he hopes to attend the University of Maryland to study business and said he also is interested in law.

Gambrills Crossroads is made up of several local businesses including J. King's Restaurant, the Little House of Flowers and the Gambrills General Store. Money for the scholarship stemmed from the group's annual fall festival. 

Joyce was presented a check for $1,000 on Monday with his parents and other family members present.

During the interview process, Joyce said he was inspired by the work ethic of his father, who ran a trucking company. He also said he learned about business issues from his mother, a real estate agent. 

J. King's owner James King said he was impressed with Joyce's desire to not only start a business but give back to the community. 

"We know you'll go on to great things," King said.
