Iconic Restaurant Reopens After Nearly Year-Long Hiatus In Anne Arundel County

ODENTON, MD — A popular burger and ice cream restaurant reopened recently in Anne Arundel County.

The Odenton Dairy Queen returned after nearly a year's hiatus.

The quick-service eatery closed around June 2024. It reopened in mid-April.

An employee said the previous owner retired. A Dairy Queen spokesperson said the long-time franchise owner closed the restaurant and sold it to a new franchise owner.

Karan Patel is the primary contact of the franchise ownership group. He is an Anne Arundel County resident, Dairy Queen said.

"Karan Patel tells us the community response to the reopening has been great," Dairy Queen said in a statement. "The Odenton location is open daily 10 a.m. to midnight."

The eatery extended its hours later into the night. There seem to be more employees working each shift, and the dessert rush has generated a steady flow of customers.

While Odenton is back in business, Dairy Queen closed a Baltimore County eatery this spring. The Rosedale location shuttered in late March.

"The franchise owner was unable to sell the restaurant," Dairy Queen said in an email, saying it couldn't answer how many employees were affected or if they had a chance to transfer. "This was a franchised location and all crew were employed by the former franchise owner. The former franchise owner would have to answer this question."

Dairy Queen has more than 7,700 locations in over 20 countries. It has 27 restaurants in Maryland.

The Odenton location, which has a drive-thru, is located at 1140 Annapolis Road. The eatery has indoor and outdoor seating, and it neighbors McDonald's.
