PARKVILLE, MD — Baltimore County police officers who exchanged gunfire with a Parkville man before fatally shooting him in November also shot the man's wife moments before she died, according to a new report released by the Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Attorney General’s Office.

An examination of evidence revealed that a bullet fired by police during a shootout with 52-year-old Arnel Redfern struck his wife, 48-year-old Maxine Redfern, the agency said Tuesday.

Evidence also confirmed Maxine Redfern was shot multiple times by her husband, according to the report.

The fatal domestic disturbance happened in the 2700 block of Maple Avenue on Friday, Nov. 24, according to Baltimore County police.

As the first responding officer approached the residence, Maxine Redfern could be heard screaming inside the home, investigators said. As she opened the front door, police heard gunshots inside the house. According to authorities, Maxine Redfern was struck by the gunshots multiple times.

Authorities said Arnel Redfern then opened the home's front door and shot at the officers, who returned fire and struck Arnel Redfern.

Officers Christopher Schanberger, Andrew Burns and Andrew G. Langley discharged their weapons during the incident, authorities said.

Officers provided medical aid following the exchange, but Arnel Redfern and Maxine Redfern were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a Baltimore Sun report, Maxine Redfern had sought a protection order from the courts as she divorced Arnel Redfern. She claimed her husband had abused her psychologically and kept her from leaving the house, the Sun reported.

Although she was granted a final protective order, the order did not require her husband to stay away from her or leave the house, the report said.
